3. Notes on “Catch”
I discovered The Cure when a summer camp counselor played me their album “Kiss Me, Kiss
Me, Kiss Me” in 1988. Returning to it decades later, the song “Catch” immediately drew me
back in. We get only fragments of a comparison between “you” and a girl from the past,
with no context for either relationship. But the memories are vivid – rolling around on a
floor that feels soft, and then waking up sore. I love that the word “catch” is used literally
and figuratively – regret at not “catching” her when she falls, and never having “caught” her
name. The original song has a full, baroque arrangement, and I wanted to pare it down –
focusing primarily on voice and cello. I hope this version brings something new – perhaps a
more direct encounter with these momentary scenes.
