3. A paragraph explaining why you covered this song
The Drowning Man was a genuine comfort to me when I was quite a lonely and isolated young woman living in a bedsit in London, back in the early 1980s. I was clearly suffering from (then) undiagnosed depression. I would imagine that I was the girl in the song and that someone cared about me and was perhaps going to rescue me from my sadness. Rather than this being a manifestation of a fixation on Robert Smith, it was all about the faceless narrator, who could have been anyone. It's only recently that I discovered who 'Fuschia' (the 'she' of the song) is/was. It makes a different sense now, but is no less precious for that. If anything, the meaning is richer and far more romantic than before. Musically, the cyclical and hypnotic nature of the song appealed to me. It's mesmeric. That the proceeds of this collection of covers goes to the charity Mind, seems fitting. The sad, lonely little me of all those years ago would have been proud.
